Brick wall layout - tutorial

#bricks #brick layout #tutorial

Hi everyone, so I didn't upload a craft project last week since I was attending an astronomy/astrophysics conference. Had a wonderful time in Brisbane, but the conference was a bit mentally exhausting, so time to do some craft blogging!

I have started doing more layouts lately (it's definitely an area I need work on) and one of the designs I had in mind was a brick wall layout. In this tutorial, I will be describing the process to create brick wall layout.

***
For this layout you will need:

12 x 12 inch plain cardstock (for the base)
12 x 12 inch patterned cardstock (for the brick pattern)

***

Step 1
Cut the patterned piece of paper into horizontal strips that are 1 7/8 inches in width. You should have 6 strips plus some excess, you will not need this excess piece of paper for the brick layout design. Make sure to keep the strips in order!

Note: For the next steps we will be working with centimetres rather than inches!

Step 2
So things get a bit complicated from here, but I promise it will be worth it for the finished look! Next you will need to cut each strip down to segments that are 11.9, 11.9 and 6cm centimetres, I have illustrated how I cut them in the diagram below. It's important to cut the strips in the same order to have the brick layout to retain the patterned paper image without distorting it.

Step 3
The small pieces that are 0.35 cm in length can be discarded. Once you have cut all the main pieces as shown, you can now adhere the pieces onto the cardstock base. First start by adhering the pieces that go along the top and bottom of the cardstock. Then adhere the pieces that run along one of the sides. Finally, fill-in/adhere the remaining pieces.

Step 4
Now you can add any photos and embellishments you like on top of the brick layout! As you can see the original patterned paper design has not been distorted by the way we went about cutting the patterned paper, and the brick design itself is subtle. I'll be using this as a base for a future layout, stay tuned! :)

Optional methods/extras:
  • You can make the brick design more prominent by having the patterned paper and cardstock colours contrast
  • You can use foam sheets behind each brick to help it stand out more
  • If you don't mind the patterned paper image being distorted you can just cut 'bricks' of the following sizes: 12 pieces of {11.9cm x 1 7/8 inches} and 6 pieces of {6cm x 1 7/8 inches} and adhere them as you please! :)

I think my favourite way to use this layout design is as a wall for picture frames. Here's a peek of an upcoming project where I used this design (although this was before I figured out how to properly cut the patterned paper to prevent distorting the image).

If you end up using this design, comment below with pictures, I'd love to see your projects! Happy papercrafting!
