Shadow box card - tutorial

#dimension #fun #shadow box

Hello paper crafters! So this is the second tutorial post this week, perhaps this is too many posts this week... but I am finding the blogging on my train rides to and from uni is a great way to pass the time! In this tutorial I'll be describing the process to create a basic shadow box card!

***
For this card you will need:

6 1/8 x 4 1/4 inch notecard (x 2)
5 1/2 x 3 3/4 inch piece of patterned paper
Collectables

The easiest way to make the following cards is to use pre-made notecards. I used white rectangle notecard packs from Kaisercraft.

Step 1

Note: Refer to the diagram below!

- Solid lines = score lines
- Dashed lines  = cut lines
- Shaded areas = parts that are cut out

Take one notecard and cut-off a 1/2 inch from the edge of one panel (this is Notecard #1). With the other card (Notecard #2), you want to score 1/2 inch from the edge of Panel 1 (this creates Fold 1), and then score 1/2 inch from the middle fold on Panel 2 (this creates Fold 2).

Die-cut a shape of your choice (I chose a hexagon, you can choose any shape) in the centre of panel 1 of Notecard #2. Punch or cut-out a small semi-circle from the middle top of Panel 2 of Notecard #2. The notecards should look like as shown below.

Once all the parts are cut and/or scored, you can fold along the score lines to obtain the general shape of each notecard as shown in the image below.

Step 2

Next step is to decorate the inner part of the card (this part is the part visible through the window of the shadow box. The panel you want to decorate is the smaller plane of Notecard #1. For demonstrative purposes I kept the decoration simple. I cut a piece of patterned paper to 5 7/8 x 3 1/2 inches and adhered it to Panel 2 on Notecard #1.

Note: Try to keep the decorations as flat as possible, otherwise it will be difficult to fit the card in an envelope!

Step 3

Once you've finished decorating Notecard #1,  add some double sided tape to Fold 1 of Notecard #2 (as shown in the top right image of the set of images below). Then align the edge of Fold 1 against the middle folding point of Notecard #1 as shown in the bottom left image. Remove the release paper from the double sided tape and fold Panel 1 of Notecard #1 over Notecard #2.

Your card panels should now be stuck together, and if you try folding back Notecard #1, the edge of Notecard #2 should fold up and pop-up the card as shown in the image below.

The below images show what the front (left image) and back (right image) cards of the card look like currently. Keep the card flipped so we are looking at the back.

Step 4

For this step, refer to the below image. Now fold the right side of the card over the middle (left image). Add some double-sided tape along all the edges of that panel except along the top (middle image). Now remove the release paper and fold the left side of the card over the middle and press down so the panel stick to the double-sided tape (right image).

Step 5

Now to create a place to write a sentiment. From the way we did Step 4, by not taping down the top edge, you should have a pocket to put a piece of paper in!

Refer to the image below for these steps. Cut a patterned piece of paper (make sure only one side has a pattern and the other side is blank) down to 5 1/2 x 2 5/8 inches (left image). I rounded the edges of the patterned piece of paper and added some foam hearts to the top middle of the paper (middle image). Now you should be able to write a sentiment on the opposite side and comfortably slide it into the pocket on the card (right image)

Step 6

Now flip over your card, now you should have a card the pops up as you open it. This is the basic structure of a shadow box card. I used some collectables to decorate the inside of the card. At this stage you can decorate the front of the card too.

Collectables are probably the best way to decorate pop-up cards, since they don't have too much bulk and so the card can still fit in an envelope! I hope this tutorial is clear/easy to follow and inspires you to create your own shadow box card!

Happy papercrafting!
